We're practicing professional plating and food styling techniques, and transporting finished dishes with the speed cart — just like they'd need to at a real competition or in a working kitchen.\r\n\r\nOne standout: during our plating unit, a student walked into the kitchen in their new chef's jacket, looked in the mirror, and said, \"I look like a real chef now!\" \r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nThey were thrilled. The chef jackets were the biggest hit — students put them on immediately and you could see a shift in how seriously they approached the lab. The new dinnerware sparked instant conversations about how restaurant presentation really works.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students?\r\nWith these resources, we're now training for local and state culinary competitions, including ProStart. Students will begin mock competitions using the dinnerware, sign holders, and speed cart to practice the full experience — plating under time pressure, presenting professionally, and transporting their work. Many students get embarrassed that they are not able to afford a calculator and have to rely on help from others. Students immediately dove into projects and began experimenting with new sewing techniques they hadn't tried before. Next, students will refine their sewing skills to create a pillowcase, pajama shorts, pants and a choice design. I plan to implement a way for students to document their process in a class portfolio, and possibly prepare a presentation for our school community.
