My students loved building earthquake simulations and studying dendrochronology through real samples. These hands-on activities are so engaging and memorable, allowing students to experience what a future field in the sciences might look like as a full time career! \r\n In our class, we turned the earthquake simulation into a competition. Students were challenged to build the tallest \"building\" models while using their knowledge of earthquake vibrations and engineering. Students appreciated that if their model was unsuccessful at withstanding the \"earthquake\" during the simulation, they could reuse their materials to try and build another model, using a combination of feedback and trial-and-error to deepen their understanding of engineering in earthquake-prone regions. \r\n Not only are these labs engaging and exciting, but they are reusable! They will continue to serve years of students over and over.
