I have always been guided by Frank Smith's research on the importance of reading being a social act of belonging. As he wrote, \"We learn to read by reading. We learn to read by being members of a reading community.\"\r\n\r\nServing as the literacy coach in a wonderful, but rural and high poverty school district, providing students opportunities to be a part of the reading community through book clubs in school is critical. Your gift allowed us to provide 4 books to each classroom this spring; each one endorsed by a school leader. Week after week during our book clubs, I had students coming up to me saying, \"I'm reading your book. When will we talk about it?\" It was an explosion of readers across the school and we were able to have a variety of choices so every child could participate. \r\n\r\nAs school starts to wind down, students are already asking about book clubs for next year. I feel so blessed to tell them we will have multiple book clubs next year thanks to the kindness of donors like you.
