Through the magazine, students are practicing important fifth-grade skills such as determining the main idea and supporting details, identifying key information, learning and using academic vocabulary, making inferences, and explaining their thinking using evidence from informational texts.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, students read SuperSTEM articles independently, with partners, and together as a class. We use the articles to spark conversations, make connections to our science and math learning, and encourage students to ask questions about the world around them. The real-world topics make it easier for students to see how the concepts they are learning in school connect to careers, technology, engineering, and everyday life.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting impacts has been seeing students who may not always choose to read traditional books become interested in reading because of the STEM topics. Students are eager to share interesting facts with their classmates, discuss what they have learned, and make connections to things they have experienced outside of school. The magazine has also encouraged students to think like scientists and engineers by asking questions, considering problems, analyzing information, and thinking about possible solutions.\r\n\r\nYour donation has done more than provide our classroom with a magazine subscription. These glockenspiels have 8 removable notes in each set. These sets make it much easier for my youngest students (K4, K5, and 1st graders) to play the right notes on the steady beat. I can take the correct notes out of the sets and give one to each student and no one can play an inccorrect pitch. This allows the students to gain the fine motor skills they need to grasp and hold a mallet and to hit the note in the center of the bar. Our other xylophones and glockenspiels have 13 bars on them and it is often very diffictult for the students to aim and strike the correct bar even if they are only playing one note. I just love these instruments for my younger students. \r\n\r\nThese instruments are helping my students develop an understanding for musicical concepts like pitch, melody, and rhythm by giving them hands-on experiences. Playing these instruments also impoves listening skills, coordination and memory.
