Instead of practicing skills through isolated passages, my students are able to apply what they are learning to a story they become truly invested in. Through our novel studies, we work on character development, conflict, theme, figurative language, vocabulary, making inferences, analyzing an author's choices, and supporting ideas with text evidence. Students are learning that strong readers do much more than understand what happened—they think about why it happened and how the author created meaning.\r\n\r\nReading together has also become one of our favorite parts of the day. We stop throughout the novel to make predictions, discuss characters, debate different interpretations, and connect earlier events to new information. I especially love watching students who may not normally choose to read independently become completely involved in the story. They start talking about the characters outside of our reading time, sharing theories with one another, and asking if we can keep reading when it is time to move on.\r\n\r\nBecause of your generosity, my students have been able to experience what it feels like to truly get lost in a great book while also becoming stronger, more thoughtful readers. These are the kinds of reading experiences I hope they remember long after they leave my classroom. The novels have also led to some of our best classroom discussions because students are excited to share their opinions and theories about what we are reading.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive. We stop to discuss important moments, make connections, analyze an author's choices, and sometimes create activities or projects based on what we have read. Those have been so helpful in giving students a way to describe their emotions.
