Efforts to introduce young students to their futures aren’t necessarily new. Offering my students opportunities for early career exploration isn’t to lock them into a career choice, but rather to expose them to the range of possibilities in an effort to keep them focused and engaged in school. Most of our students probably have not seen much outside our local area. In fact, many of their parents are not college graduates. Career exploration really motivates students and aids them to envision success in their futures. They explore the several paths using life and career characteristics to fit the profile of the South Carolina Graduate and beyond. A post-secondary education doesn’t present as impossible, even for students of poverty, as this research presentation changes their perspective on the attainability of a degree.
