As the year wound down, the kids worked toward a surprise day. After our awards day, I revealed that we would have a camping day the following day. So many of my students shared that they had never been camping. \r\nThe next morning I brought in an armful of beach towels for students who did not have one at home. We made tents with the towels and our desks and chose a book to read with a flashlight. We went outside and each student was given about 2 feet of yarn. They made a square with their yarn on the grass, and they observed everything inside of their square. Then, we came back inside, made indoor s'mores (no pictures, unfortunately, because my hands were covered in marshmallow fluff), and played a camping game. \r\nAfter lunch, we turned the lights way down and I found a flickering campfire youtube to put on our board. We made a circle on our carpet and I read scary stories aloud. The kids begged to go back to their towel tents to read with flashlights one more time. I Survived is a new favorite book series, and I know that my students will enjoy these books and our camping day tradition for years. Thank you for helping me bring magic.","fullyFundedDate":1746933950650,"projectUrl":"project/reading-our-way-to-summer/9232232/","projectTitle":"Reading Our Way to Summer!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Fink","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8473088_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y154&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1666543377998","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8473088"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6165","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":659,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":73,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":56.2,"schoolId":6165,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gateway Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gateway Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/greenville-county-schools/gateway-elementary-school/6165"}
