When we finally put it together and they realized it was a desk they were allowed to pedal, their faces completely lit up—one of my boys literally clapped and shouted, \"We get to exercise while we learn?!\" Right now, we use the fit desk as a rotating station during our daily small-group rotations. Because middle schoolers with special needs spend so much of their energy just trying to force their bodies to sit still in traditional chairs, having a quiet, natural outlet for that restless energy has changed everything.\r\n\r\nThis week, while we were working on a particularly challenging reading comprehension project. One of my students, who usually experiences sensory overload and shuts down or asks to leave the room within ten minutes of a tough assignment, was starting to get visibly frustrated. Instead of a meltdown, he asked to move to the fit desk. As he gently pedaled, you could physically see the tension leave his shoulders. He ended up staying completely anchored, channeled his anxiety into the pedals, and independently finished his entire reading log for the first time all year.
