I was able to introduce new titles and authors to my incoming 9th graders. Students in my classes were able to see themselves represented in the books that were chosen. As a result, I had a line waiting for students to check out books in my classroom library. \r\n\r\nThis was a first for me because it is usually only a hand full of students who actually want to read but once about three students came to the book shelf more wanted to come. I had announced that I received a new shipment of books but that didn't excite them as much as seeing their peers wanting to read. Guess I wasn't as cool as their peers ; ).\r\n\r\nYou have made this year a success already with your generosity. Having books that students can relate to in class helps them grow to love reading. In conjunction with the games funded in this project, teachers contributed to this project and donated games from their homes and classes as well. This space not only provided a much-needed break from academic pressures but also fosters a sense of community among students, enhancing their overall college experience. \r\n \r\nWe are thrilled to share that the lounge has already become a popular gathering spot, with students expressing their appreciation for having a dedicated area to relax and socialize. In fact, the students enjoyed it so much that a few of our basketball arcade games are inoperable. We are hoping to repair them with our local building construction class. My students have the freedom to choose seating that best supports their focus and comfort, which has helped reduce stress and create a more engaging atmosphere. The flexibility has given them a sense of ownership over their learning space, which has been incredible to witness.\r\n\r\nThese chairs will allow for even more dynamic discussions, peer workshops, and independent reflection as we continue exploring literature and creative writing. My students were super excited to receive these resources. Many teenage girls in this low resource environment are challenged with managing their menstruation. Providing free hygiene products and sanitary pads to adolescent females, this project was able to address a basic health need but also has far-reaching effects on education, empowerment, and overall well-being.\r\n Through via email, I informed the female students that I possessed hygiene products and they were available as needed. The word quickly spread among the other females in the school that I had these items. Instantly, students came to my class whispering that they needed hygiene products. Having these resources on hand was a plus because students were unable to access these resources through the school nurse(which was out on maternity leave). Most were not comfortable asking the substitute nurse that was available. \r\n Having these products helped these girls feel more confident, which reduces the shame that can be associated with menstruation. I believe it also has helped to reduce school absenteeism, especially during menstrual periods. This encourages girls to stay in school and improve academic performance. Although there is now the challenge of supplying these products long term, I believe the impact has been great.","fullyFundedDate":1726758752464,"projectUrl":"project/fresh-and-clean/8544233/","projectTitle":"Fresh and Clean","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. King","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3651430_orig.jpg?crop=960,960,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1673288865235","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3651430"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6762","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":397,"numTeachers":31,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":66,"percentWhite":21,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":66.7,"schoolId":6762,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Calhoun County High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Calhoun County High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/calhoun-county-public-school-district/calhoun-county-high-school/6762"}
