Students' faces lit up as they saw the hands-on resources for the first time. Several of them remarked that they finally felt like they were \"really doing science\" and could not wait to explore further.\r\n\r\nWe are already putting these resources to meaningful use across our curriculum. During our human body systems unit, students used the materials to model how oxygen moves through the respiratory system and into the bloodstream. They also had the opportunity to use microscopes to view real cells. Observing their own cheek cells for the first time created a powerful moment of discovery, and many students expressed amazement that they could see living parts of themselves magnified in such detail. In our weather lessons, students investigated air pressure and temperature changes to better understand storms. During our unit on waves, they experimented with energy transfer using physical models rather than only reading about the concept in a textbook. One of my favorite moments came when a group of students successfully demonstrated how sound waves move through different mediums. They were eager to explain their findings to classmates and took tremendous pride in their accomplishment.\r\n\r\nThese resources have transformed our classroom into a space where abstract ideas become interactive and concrete. Students are no longer only reading about science, they are experiencing it firsthand. Their questions are deeper, their curiosity is stronger, and their engagement is consistently high.\r\n\r\nThe next step for my students is to build on this momentum through an extended project that will connect weather patterns to the water cycle. This project will reinforce critical thinking, inquiry, and collaboration. Because of your generosity, my students now have the tools to explore as true scientists, and that opportunity is leaving a lasting impact on their learning and growth.","fullyFundedDate":1751515983449,"projectUrl":"project/fueling-future-scientists-hands-on-lab/9267554/","projectTitle":"Fueling Future Scientists: Hands-On Lab Supplies for 6th Grade Discovery","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Minto","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10004345_orig.jpg?crop=949,949,x84,y407&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1745427246483","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10004345"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_6682","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":616,"numTeachers":37,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":76,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":79.3,"schoolId":6682,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Starr - Iva Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Starr - Iva Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/south-carolina/anderson-school-district-3/starr-iva-middle-school/6682"}
