I teach English II and English III classes at a small, rural, high school in South Carolina. Our biggest club is the FFA- Future Farmers of America. We have cow pastures all around our school and live about twenty minutes from the nearest "big city". Our students are good-hearted country kids who love nature and value the importance of protecting our environment, but many of our students come from homes where education is not valued. Our free/reduced lunch is well over 50% and many of our students do not even have Internet access at home. At times, our students feel like living in the country and attending a rural, high school is a disadvantage and feel like they do not have the same opportunities as those students who attend larger high schools in the city or neighboring towns. Furthermore, many of our students are interested in technology but are unable to pursue that interest because of socioeconomic barriers and the lack of available technology at our school.
