We will read about what each is in our Science Book. Then, we will experiment with the kits for Force, Motion, and Matter. Last, we will see if what they did works. If it doesn't, they need to try to see what is wrong and correct it. The activities will reinforce and enhance what we are learning in Second Grade. The kits also came with story books that the students and I can read to see how they work in the real world. \r\n I'm excited about the planes, cars, and boats. The students get to pick which one they want to make and decorate. Then, experiment to see if they work. If it doesn't work like they thought, they can redesign it so it works better. Last, once their plane, car, or boat works, the students will race against each other to see which one comes in first, second, and third place. For example, planes will race planes, boats will race boats, and cars will race cars. My students are excited for this to take place. \r\n My students are super excited about science. My students were very excited when these items arrived! We used the new items last week for a STEM afternoon of building and thinking. The students enjoyed themselves greatly as they rotated around the classroom getting an opportunity to tryout each new item. A number of the students were shocked how much he enjoyed the geo boards.\r\n\r\nLike expected, when I was opening up the boxes everyone was asking, what is that, when can we use those. Telling them they would have to wait a few days to use them was not easy. Each day someone would ask, can we use these today? \r\n\r\nI plan on offering my students STEM afternoons multiple times a month or even when they finish a quiz. The students liked using the Phonics Fun Wheels. We used the ones with the beginning blends, ending blends, and ending sounds. The students liked being able to make their own words by turning the two wheels and creating words. \r\n The Reading Comprehension Quickies Gr. 2-3 was a big success. We used the sequencing and main idea ones. The sequencing had five different ones to do. The students took turns rotating around to use them. I used the main idea box to reinforce what we have learned already this year. \r\n In the Vowel Sounds Extra Student Pack came two sets of consonant and vowel booklets that allowed the students to change letters to make real or nonsense words. The students really liked being able to make and read real and nonsense words. It was enjoyable to me to see them doing this activity.\r\n As you can see by the photos the students enjoyed using the various games. We can move the carts around the room to accommodate more students. The students are excited about reading. They are constantly using the books on the carts to read from. \r\n We are using a program called AR, Accelerator Reader, that is a reading program. When the students read a book and take a quiz, they receive points. For every three points they get, the students go and pick out a small prize from a bin. The camera has helped the students to experience the fish in a new way. Prior to our camera the students could look at the pond and hope the fish were active above water when they were watching. The first day the camera was installed the fish were looking right at it. They were investigating the camera wondering what this strange object was in their home. The camera has been an awesome addition to our pond. When my students saw the workbench being rolled into the classroom, there was a chorus of excited noises.
