Your commitment to fostering literacy and providing enriching educational resources has already made a profound impact. Your contribution has given our students additional support to grow their brains by reading! This year, to ensure weekly access to great books, we launched a \"Library + Independent Reading\" period where each class has dedicated time each week to check out books and read for enjoyment. With your support, we purchased a rolling library cart with built-in baskets to bring a diverse selection of books directly to them. We also have dry-erase thermometer charts to track our school-wide reading goals and drawstring bags to help our students practice the responsibility of taking care of their library books. \r\n\r\nThanks to your support, we were able to open our school library in the first week of September—the earliest we have ever been able to start having students check out books. Each week, all of Moffet's 200 students visit the library, check out books to read at home, and have 25 minutes of quiet time to immerse themselves in their books. This access to high-quality literature has already made a significant, positive impact on our students' academic growth and on their experience of reading for fun. For many of our students, who come from a proud, diverse, and strong community—including 50% Hispanic/Latino, 18% African American, 22% multi-racial, and 9% Caucasian students, plus a large portion of students of Middle Eastern descent and those in our two autistic support classrooms—seeing themselves and their peers in the books they read is a powerful affirmation that you have helped provide. Our students are excitedly recommending books to each other and finding great series of books to read.\r\n\r\nBy continuing to build this community of enthusiastic and lifelong readers, we are working to ensure that every student has the tools and resources they need to succeed. Some classes made salsa with their cilantro or tried fresh cucumber for the first time. Our nature club set up aquaponics systems in each classroom in the school and taught other students how to take care of the systems. They made posters and videos linked to QR codes explaining how hydroponics and aquaponics work. Our outdoor classroom now has a rain barrel and is a great starting point to teach about runoff and sustainability. Our meal worm growing kit and cloning kit will be housed in a new \"grow room\" as students feed meal worms their vegetable scraps the meal worms will feed our aquaponics fish which in turn grow the plants that feed our students!
