However, in the second marking period, we have just begun studying nonfiction texts. My students have started using the new nonfiction resources during our literacy block as we begin building foundational research skills. The books are at \"just right\" reading levels, which allows students to engage independently with informational texts rather than becoming frustrated by decoding challenges.\r\nDuring shared reading, we have begun to explore the differences between fiction and nonfiction. After winter break, students will practice identifying key information and explore nonfiction texts through independent reading. Through shared and independent reading, students will practice identifying nonfiction text features, such as headings, photographs, and captions. My goal is to have students confidently explain how a picture helped them learn new facts—evidence that our donated materials support authentic comprehension.\r\nWhen students first saw the new books, their excitement was immediate. They went to the table and began browsing right away. I didn't have to suggest which bin to choose a book from. They independently selected the \"just right\" book. Then they retrieved their flexible seating and began reading independently. Their enthusiasm represents the importance of having access to leveled, engaging texts for building confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1758836993352,"projectUrl":"project/nonfiction-books-extend-our-classroom/9603656/","projectTitle":"Nonfiction Books Extend Our Classroom!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Daniels","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9532747_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y162&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757161050560","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9532747"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_90829","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":215,"numTeachers":26,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":71,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":20,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"8.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":54.4,"schoolId":90829,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about James R Ludlow Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"James R Ludlow Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/philadelphia-city-school-district/james-r-ludlow-elementary-school/90829"}
