These books have allowed students to explore what a story can look like through poetry and through multiple diverse perspectives, while also providing students with main characters that they may relate to. With this new text, I was able to pair it with another poetry in verse novel, as well as some non-fiction reading on historical events, authors, and figures we learned about in previous units. Authors and figures included Anne Frank, John Lewis, Art Spiegelman, Marjane Satrapi, Sandra Cisneros, and George Takei. Through diverse perspectives, historical events, and multiple forms of literature, students were able to practice the following PA core skills: (not an extensive list)\r\n1. Analyze how a text makes connections and distinctions between individuals, ideas, or events\r\n2. Analyze the influence of words and phrases and how they shape meaning and tone\r\n3. Evaluate the advantages of using different mediums of literature to present a topic or idea. \r\nStudents were also able to practice critical skills like understanding multiple cultures, identities, and experiences, and building social connections. \r\n\r\nNot only were students able to practice academic and critical skills, but they also enjoyed reading the new text. Joy in reading is a great and much-needed gift to receive.","fullyFundedDate":1762803296902,"projectUrl":"project/building-reading-and-critical-literacy-s/9878094/","projectTitle":"Building Reading and Critical Literacy Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Tomes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7287821_orig.jpg?crop=1300,1300,x1300,y348&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1762956350744","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7287821"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_91231","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":908,"numTeachers":63,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":35,"percentWhite":42,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":77.1,"schoolId":91231,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Valley Junior Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Valley Junior Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/pennsylvania/new-kensington-arnold-school-district/valley-high-school/91231"}
