Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds is one of the most powerful young adult novel’s I’ve ever read. The books tells the story of a boy looking to kill the man he thinks shot and killed his brother because of drugs. Unfortunately, drug and gun violence is a normal part of many of my students’ lives. This novel will hopefully start meaningful conversations, and my hope is that it will lead to life changing decisions for my students because many of them are faced with these harsh realities every day. I’ve also wanted to add more diverse authors and subject matter to my curriculum, and this novel is perfect.
