The new headphones/noise-canceling headphones have made a meaningful difference in the daily learning experiences for my students in my intensive elementary special education program. For many of my students, the classroom can become overwhelming by conversations, movement, student behaviors, and other everyday noises, making it difficult to concentrate and regulate emotions. Having access to these headphones gives my students an important tool that helps them manage their environment and focus on learning, gaining skills, and feeling successful at school. \r\n\r\nAs a school social worker, I see firsthand how difficult it is for a student to access instruction when emotionally dysregulated. The headphones have become a practical tool the students can utilize when in need of additional support. Students are learning to self-identify when they are starting to become overwhelmed, and are learning to advocate for their needs, including the use of the headphones when the environment seems to be becoming too much. Students are learning that the use of headphones can also be a positive strategy to help them succeed. \r\n\r\nThe generosity that provided these headphones has had an impact far beyond the items themselves. It has given my students another way to access their education, regulate their emotions, advocate for their needs, and experience success.
