Because of you, my students were able to take their learning beyond the classroom and make a meaningful impact in our community.\r\n\r\nUsing the resources you helped provide, my students created 24 birthday kits to donate to our local food pantry. Each kit included everything needed to celebrate a special day, ensuring that families facing difficult times can still experience the joy of a birthday celebration. In addition, we assembled and distributed farmer baskets to 25 local farm families as a way to show appreciation and support for their hard work and dedication.\r\n\r\nThis project became a powerful, hands-on learning experience. Students worked together to plan, organize, and assemble each item, building teamwork and communication skills along the way. One memorable moment was watching students carefully pack the birthday kits, making sure each one was complete—they truly understood the importance of their work and the impact it would have on others.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were excited and immediately engaged. They were eager to get started and took great pride in knowing they were helping real people in their own community. Their enthusiasm carried throughout the entire project.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to continue building on this spirit of service. Students are already discussing new ideas for community outreach projects and ways they can continue to support local families and agricultural communities. Because of you, my students were able to experience early American history in a way that was engaging, accessible, and meaningful.\r\n\r\nWith Blood on the River: Jamestown 1607 and A Break with Charity, students explored two pivotal moments in American history—the founding of Jamestown and the Salem Witch Trials—through the eyes of young narrators they could relate to. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by unfamiliar language and dense primary texts, students were able to build historical understanding through clear, compelling storytelling. \r\n\r\nBecause these books were written at an appropriate reading level, my struggling readers were able to access the content with confidence. This made a tremendous difference compared to our previous study of these topics. Students who often hesitate to participate became more willing to read, discuss, and share their ideas. Their reading stamina improved, and they were better able to make connections, ask questions, and engage in thoughtful conversations.\r\n\r\nThese texts also helped strengthen essential literacy skills. Students expanded their vocabulary, practiced comprehension strategies, and developed the ability to analyze characters and historical events. The vests were essential in ensuring students remained visible to traffic, while the grabbers allowed them to collect litter efficiently and hygienically. Equipped with the right tools, students were empowered to participate in meaningful, hands on work in their community.\r\nThroughout this experience, students developed a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship as they saw firsthand how everyday waste impacts wildlife, waterways, and public spaces. Many were surprised by the volume and types of trash collected, which sparked important conversations about sustainability and personal responsibility.\r\nBeyond environmental awareness, this project strengthened students' leadership and organizational skills. NHS members planned the clean-up, coordinated teams, and ensured safety procedures were followed. They practiced communication, teamwork, and problem-solving in a real-world setting—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.\r\nMost importantly, students experienced the true impact of community service.
