They grumble and groan when asked to go on a typing program that isn't a game format. I usually give my students a choice of typing programs but only one of them can be used to win physical rewards. When the rewards are snacks such as Hot Cheetos, suddenly everyone wants to use what they say is the boring typing program. I reward students on accuracy or speed (with high accuracy) and suddenly, heads are down and concentrating on their typing. A few students might still opt out of the rewards and instead go to the typing game instead. I love that I don't have to buy the rewards out of my own pocket. Usually, students are fine with drawing pictures or words on their buttons. This time, they learned how to use a button maker app to upload images, change text, and design a button on the laptops. After they designed them, they submitted their designs to be printed in color. Then students cut out the designs and I put it into the button maker to make either a pin or a magnet. Most students chose the magnets since that was new to them.
