The new flexible seating options - wobble stools, floor seats, and alternative desks - are used every day during reading, writing, and small-group work. One especially meaningful moment came during our Unit 1 goal-setting work, when students spread out around the room to reflect on their strengths, set academic goals, and map out plans for growth. Having seating that allowed them to sit comfortably, move, and think helped them stay engaged in a reflective process that can be challenging for middle schoolers. Students who often struggled to remain focused were able to settle into spaces that worked for them and complete thoughtful, meaningful goal plans.\r\n\r\nWhen the students arrived to our classroom, the excitement was immediate and genuine. They looked around, wide-eyed, and asked, \"Are these really for us?\" After we reviewed expectations and talked about flexible seating as a privilege connected to responsibility, they took ownership right away. They made smart choices about where they worked best, encouraged one another to try different seats, and showed pride in keeping our classroom organized. During our Unit 1 goal-setting, our dive into the Unit 2 poetry collection, and the creation stories we worked on, students used the new seating to spread out with notebooks, draft poems, and collaborate with peers. The ability to move to a comfortable spot helped them stay focused during the longer block that comes along with being a 6th grade, and it made our classroom feel like a true creative workshop.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these flexible seating options will continue to support collaboration, independence, and student choice as we move into new reading and writing units. Students are building stamina for independent reading, participating in peer feedback groups, and working through longer writing projects that require focus and comfort. Because of your support, our classroom now reflects the belief that environment matters - that when students feel comfortable and trusted, they are more willing to take risks, stay engaged, and do their best thinking.
