I have so many people enter my classroom and comment on how great it looks and feels- thanks to you! And the important thing is that the students see it, and feel it too. This is my largest class ever, and every tiny bit of organization helps. Students all have hooks to hang their backpacks on. I am able to keep track of whiteboard pens easier. Each day my students enter the classroom, get their materials ready for the day, and then engage in 15 minutes of Community Building. During this time they are able to choose from a wide range of activities, including the STEAM materials you helped me to purchase. \r\n\r\nStudents choose activities based on their interest, and so I have kids playing together daily who normally would not choose to interact with each other. This alone is my favorite aspect of Community Building. It allows them to collaborate in ways that are meaningful and joyful. They often ask me to take a picture of them with something they built so I can send it home to their parents. The books really brought to life how our school tools have a purpose and we need to care for them all year long so we can do fun things! The students loved the fun silly and rhyming books about how to be responsible with school tools. It led to lots of discussions on what happened in Kinder but also allowed us to create a chart for each tool. We still refer back to them! I think it really has helped them with ownership over their materials. They love to see who still has all their crayons! \r\nOur number lines have been extremely useful in our first math unit of adding and subtracting within 10. I love that I have a class set and that we can use them at the same time. I cannot believe I never had a class set before! We have used them in whole group lessons. Kids love that they are reusable. Everything is better and more intersting in first grade with dry erase markers! They are learning not only who to use the number line to add and subtract but how to count on and write a number sentence! Another great thing about these numberlines is that they are double sided and go up to 20! We will pull them out again to practice our strategies within 20! \r\nFinally, the balancing rocks have been a very popular morning activity. Students have really gotten into trying to build the highest stack! We have used the craft tin, the gelli plates, and the air dry clay. I have also used the craft sticks on a line unit with Kindergarten. Overall it has added a new creative element to`our art practice and opened up more possibilities for students to express themselves\r\n\r\nMy fifth grade students used the craft tin to make hojolata, or Mexican tin art using an embossing tool and sharpies to create landscapes, abstract designs, or traditional mexican folk art motifs. After they finished their artworks we displayed them around the school's ofrenda for Dia de los muertos which is in the entrance of the school so that families can enjoy seeing the display.\r\n\r\nSome classes used the Gelli plates to create fall leaf prints, for a printmaking unit. I will be able to use the gelli plates again and again, and plan to print holiday cards with them coming up in December. First graders just finished making clay snowflake ornaments for an upcoming Winter Festival art display, and they really were so excited to work with clay for the first time, and can't wait to bring them home before Winter break\r\n\r\nAll the students were very happy to be able to use new and different kinds of supplies, and were excited to work on their projects.
