Over the past few months, the math manipulatives you provided—Rainbow Pebbles, Magnetic Learning Numbers, geoboards, counting peg boards, the hundred board, and more—have become a joyful and essential part of our daily learning. These materials are now woven into small-group math, morning explore, and free-choice time, inviting children to engage deeply and confidently through hands-on play.\r\n\r\nOne moment that truly captures the impact of your gift happened at our math manipulatives center. A preschooler was sorting through number pieces when I asked, \"What are you looking for?\" The child replied proudly, \"I'm looking for the number four. Ta-dah, I found it.\" When I responded, \"You found the number four?\" the child eagerly said, \"You take the number four again, or here is another number to take.\" I then shared, \"Here's number three. I'm going to make number three disappear.\" The child smiled and replied, \"Yeah.\" When I asked where it went, they thoughtfully said, \"I don't know, I'm going to look for it,\" and moments later announced with excitement, \"I found it.\"\r\n\r\nTo check their work, I asked, \"Should we count to see if they are all here?\" The child nodded and counted confidently, \"Yah... one, two, three, four.\" I responded, \"They're all together now.\"\r\n\r\nNearby, another child worked with counting pegs and number cards. When I asked, \"What are you making with the numbers?\" the child shared, \"I'm making this one and this one.\" As I reflected, \"You're making the number nine and the number twelve?\" the child carefully adjusted the pieces, showing focus and pride.\r\n\r\nLater, while counting pegs together, the child paused and said, \"This one is different.\" We talked about the shapes, noticing details, and building math language together.\r\n\r\nThese moments show exactly what your support makes possible—children counting, problem-solving, noticing differences, using language to explain their thinking, and building confidence through play. When the materials first arrived, the classroom buzzed with excitement as children unpacked and explored them together. Since then, we've expanded our work with patterning, sequencing, counting, and early addition, with plans for math storytelling and sharing learning with families.\r\n\r\nYour contribution did more than provide materials—it created moments of curiosity, connection, and pride. Thank you for believing in early childhood education and for giving my preschoolers the tools they need to say, again and again, \"I found it.\"","fullyFundedDate":1755739123539,"projectUrl":"project/math-movers-shakers/9537408/","projectTitle":"Math Movers & Shakers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Howe","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10100175_orig.jpg?crop=1655,1655,x0,y259&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754841722344","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10100175"},{"teacherId":10100175,"projectId":9514891,"letterContent":"I have to tell you how much your generous gift to our Critter Corner project has meant to us. Honestly, the moment the boxes of science materials arrived, the children could hardly contain themselves. Their little faces were full of wonder as we unpacked everything — the Science Specimens, Science Lab Gear, Jumbo Magnifiers, and Dowling Magnets Simply Science Kit. It felt like Christmas morning in our classroom! Every single item became an immediate favorite, sparking questions, observations, and imaginative play.\r\n\r\nThe Science Specimens were especially magical. The kids crowded around the table, pointing and whispering to each other. \"Look, a shrimp!\" one whispered. Another carefully counted the spider's legs, \"One, two, three, four, five, six... it has six legs!\" Then one shouted, \"That's a praying mantis — it fights another one!\" I couldn't help but smile as they shared ideas and learned from each other.\r\n\r\nChild: \"You know praying mantis cuts a butterfly wing.\"\r\nTeacher: \"A praying mantis cuts a butterfly wing? Why is that?\"\r\nChild: \"'Cause praying mantis are dangerous.\"\r\n\r\nIt's moments like these that make teaching so special — just watching them notice details, think critically, and share their ideas.\r\n\r\nThe Science Lab Gear added another level of excitement. As soon as they put on the goggles and lab coats, one of them proudly announced, \"We're scientists now!\" I loved seeing how confident and capable they felt — suddenly, they were researchers exploring the world.\r\n\r\nThe Jumbo Magnifiers were a huge hit, too. The children loved looking closely at everything — the specimens, rocks from our playground, even their own hands.\r\n\r\nDuring a small group exploration, one child held up a magnifying glass and asked:\r\nChild: \"What is this called?\"\r\nTeacher: \"What?\"\r\nChild: \"This?\" (points)\r\nTeacher: \"I bet you can tell me what you're holding.\"\r\nChild: \"A magic glass.\"\r\nTeacher: \"A magnifying glass! That's right. And what do you do with it?\"\r\nChild: \"It's big! Look, my hand is big.\"\r\nTeacher: \"Does your hand look big through the magnifying glass?\"\r\nChild: \"Yeah, really big!\"\r\n\r\nEven the Dowling Magnets Simply Science Kit brought so much joy.\r\n\"They stick! Why do they stick together?\"\r\n\"Hey! It's running away from me!\"\r\n\"Look, it's dancing!\"\r\n\r\nAnd reading My Five Senses by Aliki during circle time was another favorite moment. The kids loved talking about their own senses:\r\n\r\nTeacher: \"What kinds of things do you see?\"\r\nChild: \"I see my daddy at school. He works here.\"\r\nChild: \"Your shirt is red.\"\r\nChild: \"I saw a raccoon!\"\r\nTeacher: \"Yes! We see so many things every day!\"\r\n\r\nTeacher: \"What smells do you not like?\"\r\nChild: \"My baby's stinky diaper.\"\r\nChild: \"I don't like broccoli. It's disgusting.\"\r\nChild: \"My mommy makes cookies — it smells yummy!\"\r\nTeacher: \"Exactly! Our noses help us smell all different things.\"\r\n\r\nThanks to your generosity, our Critter Corner is now full of laughter, wonder, and real discovery. These materials have helped our little ones grow curious, confident, and connected to the world around them. Every day, I see their eyes light up — all because of your kindness and support.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in our classroom and in these young learners. You've made a real difference — not just in what they're learning, but in how they see themselves as explorers, scientists, and thinkers.","fullyFundedDate":1754003306812,"projectUrl":"project/critter-corner/9514891/","projectTitle":"Critter Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Howe","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10100175_orig.jpg?crop=1655,1655,x0,y259&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754841722344","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10100175"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_108258","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":226,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":44,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":53,"percentWhite":15,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"25.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.0,"schoolId":108258,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kairospdx Learning Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kairospdx Learning Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/portland-public-schools/kairos-pdx-learning-academy/108258"}
