We have been studying how to connect what you are reading to real life situations so that books feel more real to the students. My favorite thing that I have been able to teach the students is about cliffhangers. In particular, when Fudge, in Tales of a 4th grade nothing, falls off the jungle gym and can't find his two front teeth. Right at the peak of looking for them, I cut the students off and told them they would have to return tomorrow to hear what happens. \r\n\r\nReading these books in my classroom looks different throughout the day. We have a whole-class read aloud right before lunch time. During this time, students are following along with their own copies of the books. It has been fun seeing some students who just can't wait to find out what happens read ahead to find out. I also have small groups with the more advanced readers, where we are studying the book Frindle. This has led to an interesting discussion about the etymology of words. \r\n\r\nThere are 2-3 particular students who are enjoying the whole-class read aloud. They are on the edge of their seats listening. One student in particular, who hates reading time, has asked me to start doing a mom voice during the read aloud. If I don't, I know I will get called out for skipping it. Seeing his interest peaked during a time where he was previously mentally checked out has been incredibly rewarding and makes the donations mean even more!","fullyFundedDate":1773858975274,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-read-aloud-library/10129775/","projectTitle":"Classroom Read-Aloud Library","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Ramirez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10456083"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88352","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":128,"numTeachers":8,"percentFrplEligible":73,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":2,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":5,"gradesServed":"K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"16.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":50.0,"schoolId":88352,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pilot Rock Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pilot Rock Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/pilot-rock-school-district-2r/pilot-rock-elementary-school/88352"}
