Our team placed 13th at state, and it gave them the fight and want to win this upcoming year. \r\n\r\nThank you for giving them the opportunity to see many of the plants on our list for the first time in person! This is an experience I was worried I wouldn't be able to give them due to having over 90 different plants to cover, but you made it a reality. \r\n\r\nYou also contributed to the learning of my plant science courses, which use the plants to study leaves and stem growth between different plants. This has benefitted my classroom in countless ways, and I am so grateful for everything you've done for my students. Last year, we were able to use the Kitchen Aids to participate in a cake baking contest between teams. Students brought in recipes from home, and utilized the Kitchen Aids in making those cakes a reality. The Kitchen Aids sped up this process by allowing multiple teams to get through their mixing in a reasonable amount of time instead of taking forever trying to hand mix the cakes. \r\n\r\nThese Kitchen Aids are also the first time several of my students used a mechanical mixer at all in their life. A large portion of my students come from communities and homes where they do not have basic kitchen appliances, so this was a new experience for many of them. Thank you for allowing them to see what a commercial mixer looks like and runs like, so they can better gain the skills to enter the Food Science industry. \r\n\r\nOverall, thank you so much for giving my students these new opportunities. My current class will be able to utilize them all year. The students have used these items in multiple units so far. When we first initially got them, it was December, and we were working on our baking unit to celebrate the holidays! The students made multiple projects with the toaster ovens during this time. We made lemon lavender scones, cinnamon rolls, sugar cookies, peppermint brownies, and chocolate cookies. All of these were homemade recipes that were very dear to the students. Recipes that had been passed down and are used each year around the holidays, so they loved being able to make them for their classmates during that seasonal time of year! \r\n\r\nFollowing this unit, our class learned about the poultry industry and the dairy industry. During the poultry unit, we focused on the production of chicken and eggs in the USA. The food we paired up with it was chicken strips. Students were required to fully cut up a whole chicken, clean it, and slice it into strips. Then it was dipped in egg, flour, and breading before being put in the air fryer. This taught students the importance of sanitation as well due to the risk of salmonella with the chicken. As for the dairy industry, students learned about milk production and why some of the population experience lactose intolerance. Students then made milkshakes to conclude this unit in the blender! \r\n\r\nFinally, this month, we have focused on tomatoes and avocado production. We talked about the history of both plants and why they are now staples in multiple cultures. Students are currently making salsa and guacamole in the blender. We also had the amazing experience of my Hispanic students bringing in their family recipes for both the salsa and guacamole. They are able to include their culture in class and show their classmates what their homes cook! \r\n\r\nOverall, the students have had amazing experiences learning about agriculture and the food industries it supplies.
