Our students' confidence has grown so much as a result of playing these challenging games. We began our experience with a study of magical creatures found in folktales and mythology. Our students learned a lot of high-level vocabulary that will help them when they read more complex books in the upper grades. We made connections with the origins of the creatures from around the world.\r\n\r\nWe then took time to play the games. During each game session, the students wrote in their journals their experiences as adventurers, using the vocabulary we learned the previous class sessions. \r\n \r\nThe best part of having \"game time\" was watching our students connect with each other as friends. The games gave them a positive experience with each other, as they laughed, sighed when they didn't get a card they wanted, and joked about strategy.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for providing us with such positive experiences, developing language and connecting with one another.","fullyFundedDate":1746727363518,"projectUrl":"project/english-language-learners-need-games/9266095/","projectTitle":"English Language Learners Need Games","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Comfort","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2082100_orig.jpg?crop=961,961,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1634091840771","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-comfort"},{"teacherId":2082100,"projectId":9238012,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for these artist biographies. This development of high level vocabulary will support our students with comprehension of more complex texts in the years to come. \r\n\r\nAfter exploring each biography, our students created a piece of art. This was magical. Creating art provided our students to express themselves with line, color, shapes, and textures. They were so happy creating their pieces that they asked if they could do more. Seeing them respond in writing to their reading was such an area of growth for them. The students were so excited to share what they had read and discuss the book. It was just like a grown up book club! \r\n Our high achieving readers have grown so much this year! Some of them made about two years worth of growth in one school year and I know that was due to your support in providing books to them. One student was reading 16 words per minute at the start of the year and was reading about 150 words per minute at the end of the year. Those are the sounds of Legos being put together to create something amazing. Just like the Lego projects our students constructed; their fine motor skills have come together in a big way. The students began constructing small, simple projects that are explained in detail in the booklets that came with the sets. Many students were challenged when they had to put the tiny pieces together, in tight spots on the base blocks. However, as their fine motor skills improved over time, this process became much easier.\r\nAfter the students mastered the projects outlined in the booklets, and their fine motor skills improved, they began experimenting with creating their own designs. They usually started with an idea from the booklet and then changed it to fit the vision of their new creation. \r\nI noticed an improvement in their fine motor skills outside of Lego construction. The students have had improved handwriting because it is easier to hold a pencil. Typing has also been less challenging. Finally, their use of scissors has improved greatly.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for providing us with resources to support our students with their fine motor skills. Students who are learning English need direct instruction in Tier 2 Words (high-frequency words that are used in multiple subject areas and academic contexts) and Tier 3 Words (words that are specific to a subject or content area). When new vocabulary words are presented, our students need to have rich pictures that show the meaning of the vocabulary words. Within individual, grade level units, we utilized the resources to learn the meaning of the words, through reading the definition, seeing the words in pictures, and hearing the words in the content of an article or a story. This provided our students with several ways of accessing the meaning of the new vocabulary.\r\n\r\nWe then took the new vocabulary words and pasted them into our ongoing learning logs called, \"My BIG IDEAS\". The students then took the new vocabulary words, and used them in complete sentences, to show their understanding of the new words. \r\n\r\nIn third and fourth grade, we are also using the resources to help us to study the parts of words and their meanings. We are using the resources to help us to learn the meanings of prefixes and suffixes. This will help us when we encounter new words, we read in higher level texts and in turn deepen our reading comprehension. \r\n\r\nFinally, the materials I purchased allowed me to create an ongoing word wall with the words we are using in a given unit. This word wall will allow us to review all year the words we have already learned, as well as provide our students with a resource for their future writing. \r\n\r\nI also created a companion language wall, with prefixes, suffixes, and their meanings.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for providing us with these valuable resources. Deepening our students knowledge of vocabulary will empower them in their education.\r\n\r\nWith all my heart, I thank you.","fullyFundedDate":1727993879511,"projectUrl":"project/students-need-vocabulary-resources/8802836/","projectTitle":"Students need Vocabulary Resources","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Comfort","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2082100_orig.jpg?crop=961,961,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1634091840771","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-comfort"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88432","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":388,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":34,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":60,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"15.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":71.0,"schoolId":88432,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Joseph Gale Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Joseph Gale Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/forest-grove-school-district-15/joseph-gale-elementary-school/88432"}
