In our small, rural Oregon community, many students come from low-income households where access to basic personal care items isn't always guaranteed. Because of you, that barrier is gone.\r\n\r\nHow we're using the new resources:\r\nThe Heart Cabinet has become a daily stop for students who need essentials like deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, body wash, or feminine hygiene products. It's discreetly located in my classroom so students can grab what they need without embarrassment. Some use it before P.E. or after sports practice, others before class presentations or job interviews, all moments where confidence truly matters.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment came just a few days after the cabinet was stocked: a student quietly asked if she could take a toothbrush and deodorant \"for home, too.\" When I told her that's exactly what it's there for, her relief and gratitude said everything. Since then, students have started spreading the word that my room is a safe, judgment-free place to get what they need, no questions asked.\r\n\r\nHow students reacted when they first saw the materials:\r\nThe reaction was pure excitement and disbelief. Several students couldn't believe these items were free and available to everyone. They were immediately curious, respectful, and so thankful. You could see the pride in their faces when they realized someone out there cared enough to make sure they didn't have to go without.\r\n\r\nWhat's next for our classroom:\r\nAs we continue through the school year, I plan to make the Heart Cabinet a long-term resource that grows alongside our students' needs. We've even tied it into lessons about health, hygiene, and self-care in my Health and Career Education classes, teaching students that taking care of themselves physically and emotionally is part of success. I hope to make this project an annual tradition so we can keep it stocked and continue meeting the everyday needs of our students.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has done more than fill shelves; it has filled hearts. Thank you for helping make Elmira High a place where every student feels seen, supported, and cared for.","fullyFundedDate":1753892318327,"projectUrl":"project/the-heart-cart-essentials-with-empathy/9498319/","projectTitle":"The Heart Cart: Essentials with Empathy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Slager","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8919242_orig.jpg?crop=1242,1242,x0,y178&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753397266904","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8919242"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_87964","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":374,"numTeachers":21,"percentFrplEligible":39,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":81,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.9,"schoolId":87964,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Elmira High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Elmira High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/fern-ridge-school-dist-28j/elmira-high-school/87964"}
