As soon as I unboxed the books I had kids champing at the bit to check them out. It took a week or so for me to do all the necessary processing. As soon as I had I made a display of our new books and immediately kids started asking \"are these ready? Can we check these out?\" 90% of the books got checked out the day that I made them available. It also spurred interest in some of the \"how to\" books that we already had, with kids trying out magic tricks, origami, drawing, cooking, and crafts. A parent excitedly texted me a picture of all the origami projects her son had made over the weekend. I made photocopies of some of the how to draw pages so that kids could use them in the library - often kids want to draw the same thing as their friend but it can be hard to follow directions on a shared book, especially if more than two kids are drawing at once. I saw otters, dinosaurs, axolotls, and so many other creatures. It also got kids excited about drawing things that were not in the \"how to\" books — copying the cover of their favorite book or their favorite Pokemon.\r\n\tI really appreciate the help that you gave us in making our \"how to\" book section exciting and fresh. It's so good for kids to have broader interests and it is also a valuable reading skill to decode a new kind of text - recipes and directions read differently than graphic novels or novels. I've had one kid bring me cookies she made from a recipe book - I think mostly the kids love poring over the pictures of the treats but some at least get the go-ahead from mom and dad to try things out. I've also had kids excited to share the book with their parents or big siblings. Young kids typically don't have the means to buy gifts but they love using their freedom of checking out as a way to show love to others by picking a book they think their special people will love to see.\r\n\tThank you so much for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1780247612311,"projectUrl":"project/get-kids-off-screens-and-learning-real-s/10188965/","projectTitle":"Get Kids Off Screens and Learning Real Skills","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Gilkey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10477389_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y146&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1775964427127","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10477389"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_55578","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":429,"numTeachers":18,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":49,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":39,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"23.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":79.0,"schoolId":55578,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Buena Vista Spanish Immer School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Buena Vista Spanish Immer School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/eugene-school-district-4j/buena-vista-spn-immersion-school/55578"}
