During independent reading, students build essential skills such as stamina, focus, vocabulary development, and comprehension. They practice visualizing, making inferences, recognizing character growth, and identifying themes — all while reading at their own pace. Silent reading may look simple, but it is where students strengthen the foundation that supports all of their academic learning. It is also a time to reinvigorate their love for reading, as we know it competes with their screen time. \r\n\r\nIn our classroom, silent reading is a calm and valued part of the day. Students settle into comfortable spaces, select books that interest them, and read without interruption. The room becomes quiet in the best way with deep concentration. Some students keep reading journals to jot down reflections or favorite quotes, while others talk to me about the story. Over time, their reading stamina grows as they remain engaged for more extended periods and begin to choose books more thoughtfully.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have especially embraced the new books. Some who previously struggled to stay engaged are now excited to pick up a book that matches their interests. Many students helped me pick out the books. It has been wonderful to see students recommending titles to one another and eagerly discussing what they are reading during transitions. Your support has not just expanded our classroom library, it has strengthened our reading culture. One of my students declared after finishing his book that he wasn't sure he would ever find another that would captivate his mind like that. I loved that moment for him and reassured him that I would help him find more books that he would enjoy just as much.","fullyFundedDate":1766500347305,"projectUrl":"project/silent-reading-loud-impact/9725268/","projectTitle":"Silent Reading, Loud Impact","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Shadden","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4432696_orig.jpg?crop=3158,3158,x0,y252&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758752149665","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4432696"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_88472","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":310,"numTeachers":16,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":56,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"19.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":71.8,"schoolId":88472,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dayton High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dayton High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/dayton-school-district-8/dayton-high-school/88472"}
