When we began using these, students wrote on them as if they were blank whiteboards, completely ignoring the lines. By modeling and enforcing the need to write digits specifically into their places based on their position in a number, students are increasingly demonstrating understanding of value based on place.\r\n\r\nWe most often work with numbers between 10 and 1,000, and one of my favorite ways to use this tool is to reinforce how a digit (such as 2) can be in all three places (ones, tens, hundreds), and with the use of Base 10 blocks show how our number system uses groupings to organize values. Demonstrating 2 ones versus 2 tens versus 2 hundreds with blocks aligned next to the place-value whiteboards for writing has helped several students solidify this abstract concept already. \r\n\r\nAnother way I've been able to use these with students is with the missing addend calculations. I'll give them a number, and tell them they need to add up to the sum of 100 or 1,000. They'll write on the whiteboards by place value the given number first, leave a space, then under the line write the sum. They use the columns to determine what the missing digits must be in each place and also when to regroup into the next place to find the missing addend.\r\n\r\nI couldn't have help make the concrete understanding of Base 10 blocks transfer to the more abstract concept of place and value as easily without these supplies.
