The prize wheel and donated snacks, school supplies and prizes are now a central feature of Baker Prairie's efforts to recognize positive behavior. Students earn a spin whenever they are \"caught\" showing an act of kindness such as helping a peer, including someone new at lunch, offering encouragement, or simply choosing compassion in a tough moment. One of my favorite memories so far was watching Aubrey, a typically shy student who often gets overlooked light up when a teacher gave her a ticket for helping a classmate who was overwhelmed. Her excitement as she spun the wheel and the applause from her peers was a moment I won't forget.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the prize wheel, their faces were full of surprise and curiosity. Many gathered around asking, \"How do we earn a spin?\" which opened the door to rich conversations about empathy, responsibility, and the power of small kind acts. The prizes have been a fun motivator, but more importantly, they've helped shift our school culture toward celebrating emotional growth and positive choices. Students are now actively looking for ways to help others, and teachers report a noticeable increase in small acts of kindness happening throughout the day.\r\n\r\nOur next steps involve expanding the program so our Leadership students can get more involved and suggest their own kindness challenges and track progress as a school community. We are also building in reflection activities such as short discussions and journaling prompts during Advisory so students can think intentionally about how their actions impact others. This momentum is possible because of your support. Your contribution has helped us build a kinder, more connected environment for our students, and we are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1762963901916,"projectUrl":"project/kindness-counts-empowering-students-to/9865609/","projectTitle":"Kindness Counts: Empowering Students to Spread Kindness","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ackerman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10336146"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_87577","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":532,"numTeachers":30,"percentFrplEligible":52,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":57,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":36,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"17.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.6,"schoolId":87577,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Baker Prairie Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Baker Prairie Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oregon/canby-school-district-86/paul-ackerman-middle-school/87577"}
