Working with these resources, my students have been painting and decorating stones while exploring and celebrating their dual cultural identities. One particularly powerful moment occurred when Maria, who had been hesitant to speak Spanish in class, proudly painted a stone with symbols representing both her Mexican heritage and her American experience. As she shared her stone with the class, she spoke confidently in both languages, explaining how each symbol told part of her story. This project has allowed students to honor, recognize, and take pride in their biculturalism while learning that we are all equal regardless of our home language, accent, or skin color.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the stones and art supplies, their excitement was immediate and contagious! They were amazed that they could use these beautiful materials to represent their own stories and cultures. Many students had never had the opportunity to create art that specifically celebrated their bicultural identity. I watched as shy students became animated storytellers, eager to share the cultural discoveries they were making about both of their heritage cultures. The joy on their faces as they realized they could express pride in all parts of who they are was absolutely priceless.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we're expanding our \"Stones of Joy\" project into a school-wide cultural celebration. Students are now creating presentation boards to accompany their stones, where they'll share what they've learned about their dual cultures with other classes. We're also planning to invite families to contribute their own stones, creating a community garden of cultural pride. One standout project was planning our class party - we calculated exactly how much food to buy and prepare so everyone could eat without waste, using portion ratios per person. This real-world application made the mathematics meaningful and connected to their daily lives.\r\n\r\nMy students were amazed when they first saw the materials! Their excitement was palpable as they discovered they could actually touch, move, and manipulate mathematical concepts. Everyone stayed focused and genuinely enjoyed using the manipulatives. What thrilled me most was hearing their conversations - they were using academic mathematical language naturally while demonstrating their work with the hands-on materials. The manipulatives helped them make connections between what they see with numbers at home and what we're learning in class, making mathematics feel accessible and relevant.\r\n\r\nSince it was the end of the school year, I couldn't do immediate follow-up then, but this new school year, after implementing the same rotation activities, my plan is to build on this foundation by connecting fractions to decimals. The students' comfort and enthusiasm with the manipulatives has prepared them perfectly for these more complex mathematical relationships.
