They respond to their teacher's direct instruction, have opportunities to practice increasingly complex reading skills, and will become fluent, skilled readers. There are also people that need many more opportunities to strengthen their reading skills. Those are the people, current students, that I have the privilege of teaching. My students receive reading instruction in class, with their classroom teacher, using a specific curriculum, and come to my classroom for an extra 20-30 minutes of targeted reading instruction. However, I do not have a separate reading intervention curriculum. When students come to my classroom for a reading group, they see the same stories that they are reading in class. Sometimes, the repeated reading is very helpful. Many times, students see these stories and become disengaged. This disengagement has become a barrier to reading growth because their effort in the face of rigor has decreased. Imagine having to read the same story, year after year. The magazines that I purchased with this grant provide opportunities to practice specific reading skills in an engaging way. \r\n\r\n\tWhen I am planning for reading instruction with my small groups of students, I follow the skill they are learning with their classroom teacher. For example, in first grade students are learning and practicing the /or/ sound, like in the word, \"for.\" My role is to provide another dose of instruction and opportunity for practice with that skill. I look at the scope and sequence of the new magazines I purchased, and find the level that includes the /or/ skill. I pull the three different magazines that include the /or/ pattern and students read articles like \"Life at the South Pole,\" \"Whale Sharks,\" and they learn fun idioms like, \"Fall Short,\" or \"Bark Up the Wrong Tree.\" One of my students loved reading the article, \"Strange But True: Far-Out Sports.\" This article is about races with unusual items like an egg yolk in a spoon and wheels of cheese! Now that I have new, exciting materials, my students are more motivated in the face of challenging reading skills.","fullyFundedDate":1741223598519,"projectUrl":"project/magazines-please/9130730/","projectTitle":"Magazines Please!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Chorlton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp802669_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1534386422234","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jessiegoss"},{"teacherId":3769932,"projectId":9315436,"letterContent":"We are so appreciative of your generosity in helping add so many interesting books to our classroom library. Over the years, I have striven to get more Spanish literature into students hands for independent, choice reading, and this latest addition of books was an absolute hit!\r\n\r\nAt the end of last school year, I kept our new books apart from the library shelves, and students read, passed around, traded, and shared those texts for the remainder of the school year (there was approximately one per student). This year, I mixed them into the larger/general classroom library collection, yet see those very titles being pulled from the shelves over and over in these first weeks of school.\r\n\r\nWhen creating the wishlist, I suspected that students would especially love the informational/encyclopedia-style books...and they are notably popular, as well as take up a decent portion of students' desktops, as they tend to be oversized tomes!
