We used the dry-erase sleeves daily for math games, giving students opportunities to practice important math skills in an interactive way. One of the best parts was that students got to take home their own sleeve filled with math games at the end of summer school. They were excited to have materials of their own that they could use to continue practicing and building their math skills at home!\r\n\r\nAnother highlight of the summer was our hands-on science exploration using Alka-Seltzer tablets and film canisters. Students learned about chemical reactions by first observing what happens when Alka-Seltzer mixes with water. Then, they made predictions about what might happen when the same reaction took place inside a closed canister. The excitement really built when we took our learning outside and discovered that the gas produced by the reaction created enough pressure to launch our mini rockets higher than the school building! We had so much fun launching our rockets, observing the results, and seeing whose rocket would fly the highest. It was an unforgettable way to bring science concepts to life!\r\n\r\nThank you again for making these learning experiences possible. Students explored the planets and created their own colorful solar system artwork using the pastels. We also incorporated math by using compasses to draw circles and adding a measurement component to our projects. It was wonderful to see students making connections across subjects while learning through art and exploration.\r\n\r\nThe students were especially excited when they first saw the pastels and discovered that each of them would have their own set to use! They eagerly got to work experimenting with colors and techniques to bring their solar system creations to life. One of the best moments was seeing how proud they were of their finished artwork. Our dice also become a favorite during math games, giving students a chance to build number sense while working together. It has been wonderful to see students who can sometimes be hesitant in math become more willing to take risks and try something new.\r\n\r\nThis fall, my new group of students have started to explore our math tools with excitement, too. Students can see what a word means while they are learning to read it, which is especially helpful for our multilingual learners. There are also simple, consistent routines, along with practice pages, digital books, and game cards that give students lots of opportunities to practice the same skill in different ways.
