I know you were hoping to see lots of science projects come out of these texts. Unfortunately, so far, the science books have found less of an audience (though I know a couple of kids have been hard at work on a project inspired by the book about building a robot). The biography The Lost Women of Science is starting to gain word-of-mouth popularity, and, not surprisingly, graphic texts like Troubling Tonsils, Makers Club, and Witches of Brooklyn have been big hits. The novel, The Academy, is proving to be especially popular, and it is being eagerly passed around. It's a good thing I included its sequel in the collection, too! \r\n\r\nThe support you've provided to our 69 5th-graders has been amazing. Being able to provide them with dozens of new books has kept them motivated and reading a high volume and wide variety of books for the first several months of school. We're a little over a month into the school year, and it has been so rewarding getting to connect the new 5th graders with new, awesome books. Your support of our reading classroom has made it possible for me to have perfect recommendations right at my fingertips. And when certain books aren't at my fingertips because someone else is reading them, I can apply a little encouragement (okay, pressure) to the other kids to keep up with their at-home reading and push to finish books in fewer days than they normally would. \r\n\r\nToday, the 5th graders will be turning in their first reading log of the year, and it will be fun seeing so many of the books from this collection in their reading history. I haven't run the numbers yet, but after a cursory glance, it looks like most kids read 6-10 books in the first month. Not too shabby!\r\n\r\nI look forward to continuing to hype and promote great books throughout the year. Having a quality speaker has made for such a fun start to the year. Our 5th graders are rotating between three classrooms, and having music available has helped create smoother, more efficient transitions. When energy is lagging, a random 30-second dance party can be just the thing for getting kids back on track. The portability of the speaker will also be huge when we have the opportunity to share creative projects outside. I hope to add an external mic, which will allow kids to present to others in a more professional-feeling format. This speaker is getting steady use throughout the day. As anticipated, popular sequels like Paper Dragons #2 and Liars Society #2 have been eagerly passed around, but series starters like Cinderella and the Beast, Montgomery Bonbon, and Last Chance Academy also have kids clamoring for sequels. Stand-alone novels such as Revolution 1776 and Beasts have also been big hits, and some kids are making summer reading wish lists since there isn't enough time remaining in the year to read all the books they want to read. I realize that when I described the project I said that there was something for everyone among these books, but that has really proven true as the kids have dug into the collection. For example, the book Very Bad at Math and its discussions of dyscalculia has been enlightening for my students who struggle in math, while the dyslexic protagonist of Mixed Up has also resonated with both my students navigating dyslexia and their friends who want to better understand the struggles of their classmates. The book Cassi and the House of Memories has sparked discussion about dementia and grandparents, which has been really helpful for the kids who thought they were the only ones dealing with declining relatives (and given me a way to discuss my own mother's struggles). \r\n\r\nOf course, the books are not all about serious topics. Sequels like Dog Man: Big Jim Begins, Spy Ski School, and Lizard Boy 2 have been eagerly passed around, while series starters Cartoonists Club, Ghost Town, and The Little Fighter have quickly been passed around with excited hype. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for helping bring these books into our classroom.
