Third graders occupy a tricky spot on the elementary reading continuum. Among students, there is wide variation in reading level, ability to focus, and social-emotional development. As a result of these factors, some students are ready to jump into more complex chapter books, and others gravitate toward texts that are more picture-driven. Add to this the natural range in students' interests and experiences, and it's clear that an effective classroom library needs the widest variety of literature possible. This project will provide my students with a wider variety of books that they can read independently. My students will be able to take reading strategies that they have learned during whole-class instruction and apply them to books that are not only at their "official" reading level, but that is engaging to them personally. An engaged reader is more likely to be a successful reader and a more empathetic and thoughtful citizen...for life! The books I've selected for this project are all recently written and published, and are more likely to speak to current students' interests and sensibilities. These are also books that have already proven to be popular among third graders and are, therefore, in high demand. Lastly, I have curated a list of titles that not only allows my students to see themselves reflected in stories but also provides a window into new worldviews and experiences.
