The students were so excited to help unpack the boxes of snacks, headphones and wipes. All of these items make a big difference in our day to day routine. \r\n\r\nHeadphones (that work!) are huge. We have state testing coming up and functioning headphones are critical for students to be able to take the test and listen to the directions and cues. Our district provided headphones break or simply don't work on a regular basis.Having quality options give me and the students piece of mind. \r\n\r\nSnacks are key to our day to day routine. Many kiddos rely on the snack they get at school and having a steady supply for when they need it is very reassuring. It is nice to not have to constantly ask families to donate and to be able to provide our students with some fuel to keep their focus on school, not hunger. And of course - wipes to clean up before and after! Couldn't have done it without donor support and matching from Quill. My students have been absolutely loving listening to these stories and engaging in projects connected to these themes. Here are a couple of examples of how we have been using the resources: \r\n\r\nIn a kindergarten group we read \"No, David\" which is about a boy who is still learning to make safe choices and actively listen. We used that story as a launching point to discuss what listening with our whole bodies looks like in the classroom. We made big bunny-ear headbands to practice \"amazing listening\" and have been playing games like \"Red Light, Green Light\" and \"Simon Says\" to practice \"turning our ears\" on.\r\n\r\nIn another first grade group we read \"Not a Box\". This book is all about seeing things from different perspectives...it shows how a box can be anything- a space ship, a car, a house or a lion...there is not just one way and no \"right\" answer. This was a perfect starting point to discuss how we can also be flexible at school and listen others' points of view. After reading the book, students are constructing different things out of boxes. One is making a Minecraft character. Another student is making a robot. Although different, both ideas are amazing and we are practicing celebrating having different ideas!\r\n\r\nThanks again for investing in public education.
