Our current school librarian is working hard to update our out of day school library, so having these new books available in my classroom has helped tremendously. \r\n\r\nTeachers in my state are at the very end of the pay scale in the nation, but I still find ways to put books in the hands of my students: thrift stores, friends, family, and my personal pocket. Having Donors Choose as a resource has truly stepped up my game as a teacher, which directly affects my students. \r\n\r\nAttempting to bring back the love of reading in our youth is high on my priority list. Having new, fresh reads for my kiddos helps. I introduce a new book or author to them every week. I tease them with just the first chapter or two, then make the book(s) available for check out. I am slowly seeing their interest level broaden. The paint, paint brushes, masking tape, microfiber cloths, and paint pens have given my students materials they can actually use to create, experiment, and show what they know in a way that goes beyond simply completing a worksheet.\r\n\r\nMy students were excited to see the new supplies and immediately wanted to know what they would be able to create with them. We have been using the materials as part of our hands-on science activities, allowing students to work together while applying science concepts in a creative and meaningful way. The paint pens and masking tape have been especially useful for adding details and creating organized designs, while the brushes and other materials allow students to take an active role in their projects.
