We have been using our new materials in both Biology and Environmental Science, and the ant colony has quickly become a classroom favorite. When students first saw the ants, they were immediately curious and wanted to gather around to see what they were doing. Since then, they have watched the ants build tunnels, move food, interact with one another, and work together as a colony. I love hearing students point out something new they have noticed or stop by the colony just to see what has changed.\r\n\r\nIn Biology, we have been able to connect our observations to concepts such as animal behavior, cooperation, ecology, and how group behaviors can help organisms survive. I have also used the colony with my Environmental Science students while learning about ecosystems and resource availability. The ants give students a small-scale example of how organisms depend on resources such as food, water, space, and suitable environmental conditions. We can also observe how living organisms interact with and physically change their environment as the ants move soil and construct their tunnels.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to begin making more structured observations of the colony. Students will be able to collect data, look for patterns in the ants' behavior, and use evidence from their observations to explain how environmental conditions and cooperation affect survival. These resources have given us a living system that we can return to throughout the school year as we encounter new concepts.
