They use the headsets to record their responses to practice prompts, improving their fluency, pronunciation, and confidence. Before receiving these headsets, many students struggled to find quiet spaces to practice or felt self-conscious speaking aloud in a busy classroom. Now, they can focus and engage with their learning in a way that truly supports their success.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students the most about these headsets is the ability to hear themselves and track their progress over time. Many have shared how this has helped them refine their pronunciation and organize their thoughts more effectively under timed conditions. One student, in particular, who was initially hesitant about the speaking section has now gained the confidence to express her ideas clearly and fluently. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt vignettes, it opens the door to discussing identity, culture, and aspirations—subjects that resonate deeply with my students. They are learning to analyze themes, identify literary devices like symbolism and imagery, and develop their comprehension and critical thinking skills, all while seeing reflections of their own lives in Esperanza's story.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an interactive, shared experience. We engage in popcorn reading, which builds community and encourages participation. After each chapter, we discuss the emotions and ideas it evokes, often tying it back to the students' own stories. These lively conversations make the book come alive, fostering an atmosphere where students feel safe to express themselves. Quizzes after each chapter help reinforce their understanding and boost their confidence as readers. The printer is a great tool for accomplishing these things. We have several young artists in our group that produce graphic materials for flyers, affirmation cards, posters and infographics. With our new printer, we can print in full color, on different sizes of paper, and scan in handmade artwork. We've literally been dreaming of this for years, and have lots of ideas we've been waiting to produce. \r\n\r\nOne of our younger students, who is often very quiet during our meetings, made an amazing full color poster on his iPad. We were able to print it up in full color and will use it to publicize our \"Self Care Survey.\" This is an online survey where students can anonymously discuss any mental health issues they may be experiencing, and our Psychology Club members will offer them advice or hook them up with resources to help them. We will also use the printer to produce wallet sized cards with positive affirmations to hand out at student events, or just to anyone who needs a pick-me-up. They will be designed by our students with original artwork. The printer will also enable us to make digital copies of materials that we can store on our Google Classroom site or Instagram page. \r\n\r\nAll in all, we will be able to put this technology to good use. These chargers have had a profound impact for whole classrooms and offices. We are 1:1 school. This means that all our students are issued an iPad to use for the school year. Our teachers have done an excellent work building spaces in their classrooms that meet a variety of academic and non-academic needs for students. Having charging stations within these spaces has helped to reduce academic anxiety and embarrassment.\r\n\r\nThese stations have been especially impactful during seasons where testing is a priority and focus. The stations provide a safe alternative to students plugging in electronics in the hallway, cafeteria, and other undesignated areas of the building. Some students have even been able to safely charge their iPads overnight in secure areas of the building such as the counseling and administration offices when unable to do so outside of school.\r\n\r\nAs the landscape of education continues to change with more of the outside world spilling into the building, being able to reduce anxiety and barriers to learning has become a lifeline for many students. While the reliance on technology continues to increase, it is important make sure that students are not excluded due to a lack of access to resources. More than 30 individual students are now regularly using the charging stations that are located in the office, and teachers report that even more are using the stations that are located in classrooms around the building.","fullyFundedDate":1650548665699,"projectUrl":"project/charged-and-ready/6356885/","projectTitle":"Charged and Ready","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Botkin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3906117_272x272.png?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1475532948198","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3906117"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_87064","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2007,"numTeachers":98,"percentFrplEligible":87,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":28,"percentWhite":20,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":34,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":65.1,"schoolId":87064,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Putnam City High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Putnam City High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oklahoma/putnam-city-schools/putnam-city-high-school/87064"}
