For many of my students school is their safe space. One of my duties as a school counselor is serving as my school's homeless liason. My office is often the place where many students, including our homeless students, come to take care of physical needs like food, toiletries, etc. My hope is that we can help remove some of the barriers keeping them from learning. Helping to provide some basic needs will help to remove one stressor off of their plate so they can focus on their school work and we can keep school their safe space. Just as Maslow's hierarchy of needs suggests basic needs must be met before growth can happen and hopefully this project can be a step in the right direction to help with that.
