I took over this library after 9 years of not having a certified librarian with a somewhat outdated collection. We are a small, rural school and I knew we needed more books with diverse representation. \r\nOne of my goals was to create individual sections within the library for Native American History and Black History. I wanted these sections to be highlighted all year, not just in certain months or for certain holidays. Many of the books in this grant helped bring those sections to life. I had a parent in tears when she saw the children's book about the Tulsa Race Massacre. The books I received in this grant have been circulated many times in the weeks since I have added them to our system. \r\nI have a class of fourth graders who enjoyed learning more about Pura Belpre in association with Hispanic Heritage Month, and even created their own puppet shows and stories that they were able to present. \r\nThe nonfiction section of my library was not utilized much and many of the books were outdated. The books about the different regions of the United States will aid in future research projects for my 2nd-5th grade students. The books centered on loving libraries will be perfect for my youngest learners coming to the library for the first time.
