These titles have opened the door to honest conversations about justice, empathy, and the complicated history that shapes our world today. My students are learning how to question, analyze, and reflect in ways that go far beyond surface level reading. They are beginning to recognize how authors use real stories to build understanding and show why every voice matters.\r\n\r\nOur classroom reading time has become something I truly look forward to each day. Students settle in quickly, and even my reluctant readers have begun leaning into the texts with curiosity. We pause often to examine character choices, discuss historical context, and consider how the problems faced in the books connect to modern issues. These moments are not scripted or forced. They are genuine sparks of understanding that happen because my students feel invested in what they are reading.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who rarely participate have taken a particular interest in these books. One of my quietest students asked if she could take Just Mercy home so she could keep reading after school. Another student who usually avoids class discussions has become our most thoughtful voice during conversations about fairness and accountability. These books are helping them see themselves in new ways. They are connecting to stories that are real and meaningful and beginning to understand how history can guide the choices they make today.\r\n\r\nYour donation made this possible. Thank you for believing in my students and for helping me create a classroom where reading is not just an assignment but an opportunity to grow.","fullyFundedDate":1755747195426,"projectUrl":"project/using-historical-nonfiction-to-teach-tol/9266158/","projectTitle":"Using Historical Nonfiction to Teach Tolerance & Racial Equality","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Lisa Ward","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1067887_orig.jpg?crop=1280,1280,x0,y81&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1722454865596","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1067887"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_87084","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":300,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":69,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":52,"percentIndigenous":26,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":63.2,"schoolId":87084,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Henryetta Senior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Henryetta Senior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oklahoma/henryetta-school-district-i-002/henryetta-senior-high-school/87084"}
