Through these stories and activities, students are learning to identify emotions, recognize how their feelings affect their bodies and behaviors, develop empathy for others, and practice strategies for calming down when emotions feel overwhelming. Reading together gives us meaningful opportunities to discuss real-life situations, build vocabulary for expressing feelings, and help children understand that they are not alone in their big emotions.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and engaging! We read aloud, pause to ask questions, make connections to students' experiences, and encourage them to share their thoughts and feelings about the characters and situations in the stories. These conversations help students develop listening and comprehension skills while also building important social-emotional skills. The books provide a natural way to introduce conversations about friendship, problem-solving, self-regulation, and asking for help when needed.\r\n\r\nThese books and activities are especially valuable for young students who are still learning how to recognize and communicate their emotions. Children who sometimes struggle with frustration, worry, disappointment, or other big feelings can see themselves in the characters and learn practical ways to handle similar situations. By pairing these stories with activities to practice calming strategies, we are helping students build confidence, emotional awareness, and the skills they need to feel safe, connected, and ready to learn.
