They have reading levels ranging from 3rd grade and up. When we tried to read the high school level novels, they were so lost and overwhelmed. They did not enjoy the reading at all, and began to complain after the first day of reading.\r\n\r\nWith the donation of these books, you have changed their entire experience with English classes this year. First, some of these books provide literature they can relate to. My students have become very invested in the stories. Teenagers, invested in great literature... That is miraculous in itself. Secondly, the graphic novels help my struggling readers with comprehension and understanding. We spend a lot of time talking about the pictures and the details they tell us in the story. Many of the students use the pictures as context clues, which has helped them greatly increase their vocabulary. \r\n\r\nI want to mention, too, with these books the students are not overwhelmed. They ask me daily, \"Do we get to read today, Ms. H?\" That is music to my ears. It is a far cry from the grumbling and complaining at the beginning of the year. One student actually told me they were \"bummed\" because we didn't have time to read another novel before the end of school. (I promised her we would read it at the very beginning of next year.) Thank you so much for helping me ignite a passion for reading in my students, and helping them learn they they actually CAN read, when so many were convinced that they can't. You are our literacy heroes.","fullyFundedDate":1768941843467,"projectUrl":"project/roadway-to-literacy/10014874/","projectTitle":"Roadway to Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hinshaw","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10403133"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_86493","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":200,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":61,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":71,"percentIndigenous":22,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"22.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":64.3,"schoolId":86493,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Depew Middle High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Depew Middle High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/oklahoma/depew-school-district-21/depew-high-school/86493"}
