We have already had three classes utilize the library to find a book for their European Literacy Project; a large portion of the novels from this grant were to support this assignment. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, the remaining books from this grant will support students participating in National History Day. The theme this year is Innovation in History: Impact, Influence, Change. I selected books that could spark topic ideas and aid in research. Books like Who's Got Mail describe the history of the United States Postal Service - a perfect jumping off point to discuss the transformation of this system the past 250 years. \r\n\r\nAlthough, these books were specifically selected with NHD and European Literacy Projects in mind, they are available for all students at Oliver. During the unit and in partnership with the librarian, students participated in a Sorting Ceremony to boost reading engagement and energy for the text; it was the perfect way to kickoff the novel study and interest in Harry's adventures. \r\n\r\nHowever, the ELA teacher was soon asking the librarian for help mending books. They were falling apart at an alarming rate - probably because the novels were originally purchased before the current 7th graders were even born. Glue and determination proved only a temporary fix; it was obvious the books needed to be replaced, especially since two more 7th grade ELA teachers wanted to join in the fun for next year. We were going to need a LOT of books and as you know, that's not cheap. \r\n\r\nLuckily, with the help of generous donors like yourself and our PTA, our project is funded!!!! We finished reading Walk Two Moons before Christmas and they worked on creative projects afterwards. The students connected deeply with the characters. Not only did they use their reading skills to analyze and comprehend the story, but they also deepened their empathy and understanding for those different from themselves through the plight of the narrator and her family. \r\nPart of their final project incorporated the mysterious messages into art work that demonstrated the meaning behind the messages. Some students chose to put themselves in Sal's shoes (main character) and \"walk two moons in her moccasins\" through writing in her voice and as other characters as they reacted to Sal. Overall, they were touched by the message and ending of the story.
