Instead of simply completing assignments on paper or using digital tools, students are able to sketch ideas, create models, design prototypes, and visually represent their thinking. The mobility of the cart also makes it easy to bring supplies to different areas of the classroom and provide students with the materials they need when inspiration strikes.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these supplies have helped students understand that STEM is not just about numbers, formulas, and technology—it also involves creativity, imagination, collaboration, and problem-solving. After introducing the relationship of DNA with genes, proteins, and traits, students had the opportunity to build the new DNA models. Students enjoyed the challenge of trying to figure out the \"puzzle\" and follow the instructions to complete the models. They clearly saw that the DNA is made of distinct \"bases,\" which will be helpful when they learn about genetic mutations (happening today!). \r\n\r\nThe students also enjoyed the Mendelian Genetics of Corn activity and getting a visible representation of how certain traits sometimes \"skip a generation\" but then reappear. That led to learning about dominant & recessive traits, Punnett Squares and genotype/phenotype probabilities. They used Canva to create 4–5 school spirit wear designs each, gathered peer feedback, revised and refined their work, and ultimately narrowed their selections down to one final design. We then collected sizes and colors from each student and ordered t-shirts for every participant. Their final artwork was sent to a local printing company, where it was turned into direct-to-film transfer featuring their original creation.\r\n\r\nStudents learned how to properly place and heat-press their own designs, and the pride on their faces when they wore their shirts around school was priceless. Not only did they gain hands-on experience with graphic design, production, and marketing — they also got to see how their creativity can lead to real opportunities.\r\n\r\nAfter Thanksgiving break, we will be offering four student-voted designs for purchase in the school store, marking the first official product line completely conceptualized and created by students. Middle school students are so active and this gives us something that we can use frequently to get the kids up and moving. It has really been a good community builder in my classroom!\r\n\r\nI really appreciate you taking a chance on me with this project for a basketball hoop. I'm sure it sounded strange when you first got it, but we have had so much fun with it. I create youtube videos and quizzes and then put them up on the screen and the students can shoot while they are reviewing for our tests. During Christmas I created a historical elf on the shelf game for us to play that goes along with the hoop, where they get to shoot if they get the question correct and can provide extra details! \r\n\r\nEveryone who comes by my class from previous years is jealous that this goal is in my class now and not when they were in class.
