These resources have given my struggling readers more opportunities to practice reading in a way that feels successful and encouraging. The books allow students to practice the sounds and words they are learning, while the letter tiles give them a chance to build words, change sounds, and see how letters work together.\r\n\r\nWe are using the books and letter tiles during small-group reading lessons and independent practice. I have already seen students become more willing to try words instead of giving up when they get stuck. They can use the letter tiles to build a word, change one sound, and then read the new word in a book. Seeing a student successfully read a word or sentence that was once difficult is such a rewarding moment. My third graders were so excited when they first saw the materials. They were eager to touch, explore, and figure out how they could use them to solve math problems. We are using the manipulatives during whole-group lessons, small groups, and math practice to help make difficult math concepts easier to understand. Students have especially enjoyed being able to build, move, and see the math instead of only working with numbers on paper.\r\n\r\nThese resources have helped my students become more confident problem solvers. We are currently using the manipulatives to practice important third-grade skills such as multiplication, division, place value, and problem solving. Instead of simply memorizing an answer, students can use the materials to show how they found their answer and explain their thinking. Our next step is to continue using these hands-on tools as we move into more challenging math concepts and eventually connect what students build and see with drawings, numbers, and equations.
