This was such an important addition to our garden and science class. We have already put the supplies to good use! Each table group in my class has their own utensils, mixing bowls, mixers, and measuring tools. This has allowed more students to participate because we have enough equipment for several students to participate at the same time. We recently used the tools to pan fry parsnips in our pans. We also cooked them and blended them into a parsnip mash. The students absolutely loved it! Thank you for providing us with tools that are not only important to our garden and science class but that will help build memories and life skills for years to come. We have been anxious to get seating in the garden space so that students can work in the garden without having to sit on the mulch beds. We used both of the benches throughout the summer as seating and to host our weekly Donut Days for the Garden Club. We also used them when we tie dyed our Garden Club t-shirts. We've looked outside several times and noticed the birds like the benches as well! The kids were very excited to build the benches when we got them. We were able to discuss some basic tools and following directions. The students also clear-coated it with stain so that it would be protected through rain and other bad weather. Each year we purchase a mixture of compost and soil to amend our current garden beds. This is essential to ensure that they grow healthy each summer. It is also a very large cost, so we appreciate every contribution that is made towards this cost. The kids were very excited when they saw the large piles of dirt. They worked hard with several of our younger grades to move the soil to our new bed space. This promoted teamwork and provided a buddy program in the garden. This helps our younger students get excited for the garden program as well. The soil and compost grant is one that I post each year to maintain our school garden. Good soil is essential to good garden and plant growth. Unfortunately, this is an expensive endeavor, so your contribution is greatly appreciated. The soil that we use is half soil and half compost. Not only do we top off our existing beds with it, but we start all of our new beds with this mixture. I use this time to teach my 7th and 8th graders about soil health, the nitrogen cycle, and the carbon cycle. We do visual observations of the previous year's soil and the new compost/soil mixture and compare their properties. Students learn soil is not just soil, and they are able to determine the qualities of healthy soil, just by looking at it. Without this grant and the soil/compost mixture, our garden would not be as successful as it is year over year. Thank you again for helping us grow.","fullyFundedDate":1746658868359,"projectUrl":"project/ground-yourself-in-good-soil/9134884/","projectTitle":"Ground Yourself In Good Soil","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. McManus","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1041302_orig.jpg?crop=529,529,x0,y17&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1679093904639","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/amcmanus"},{"teacherId":1041302,"projectId":8902477,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your support of our school's lending locker.
