With the addition of more ceramics glazes in the classroom, students have been able to experiment and explore the world of 3D arts! The color variety has allowed students to learn more about color mixing, color theory, and self-expression through design.\r\n\r\nThis school year, students in secondary classes have been able to learn some base level handbuilding and wheel thrown techniques, and then personalize their work with colored glazes. The students have been responsible for mapping out their colors, studying the science behind the firing process, setting up, organizing, and cleaning up all materials on a daily basis. Students have also been able to study historical techniques such as \"Majolica\" as well as modern techniques of layering underglazes with crystal gloss glazes.\r\n\r\nThe new materials were like a \"Christmas morning\" as described by one of the students! The watercolor-like underglaze palette was a big favorite of the advanced artists who were able to apply advanced painting techniques to their ceramics projects.\r\n\r\nStudents will continue to learn more about the science behind the firing process and how it impacts glazes, and the differences between cone temperatures (which can impact how colors appear). As the year progresses, students will be challenged to build larger, more intricate projects, and plan out layers of both underglaze and gloss glazes, that need to be applied at different phases of the drying and firing processes. The Rubik's Cubes have become more than just colorful puzzles; they are tools for building strategy, resilience, and logic. Students work together to learn solving methods, break down complex patterns, and support one another through challenges. I've witnessed students who were once unsure of their problem-solving abilities grow more confident as they tackle increasingly difficult patterns and strategies, turning frustration into excitement and accomplishment.\r\n When students first saw the cubes, their reactions ranged from curiosity to pure enthusiasm. Many had never held a Rubik's Cube before, and they immediately began experimenting with twists and turns, eager to figure out how it worked. This hands-on exploration sparked conversations about algorithms, math connections, spatial reasoning, and even patience. The cubes have inspired healthy competition, teamwork, and reflection; students celebrate their own progress and cheer on classmates who reach new milestones. It's been a joy to see the entire room so actively engaged in learning.\r\n Looking forward, students are planning Rubik's Cube clubs, peer-teaching sessions, and guided challenges that extend beyond the classroom. They're taking what they've learned about problem-solving and applying it to other subjects, improving their flexibility in thinking and their willingness to approach difficult tasks. One memorable classroom moment was when a group of students saw their first printed design on a mug; cheers erupted as they held up a product they had created from scratch. It was a powerful experience that reinforced how creativity and technology come together in the real world.\r\n When students first saw the new materials, their excitement was contagious. Many had never worked with this type of printing before, and their eyes lit up as they realized that what they design on a screen can become something tangible. Because of these resources, we've been able to push beyond simple concept lessons into authentic, hands-on entrepreneurship projects. Students are now brainstorming product lines, thinking about pricing and marketing, and even preparing for real sales opportunities.\r\n Looking ahead, my students are planning their next steps by creating mock storefronts and digital portfolios to showcase their products. Students absolutely loved this space VR experience and some students even came to the library after school to explore space more. Finally, we read Dinosaur Lady: The Daring Discoveries of Mary Anning, the First Paleontologist. Then students surrounded themselves with dinosaurs in the app \"Jurassic World.\"\r\n We will continue to use the MetaQuest with our library story time in the future and I will also invite our middle school and high school teachers to use VR with units like the Anne Frank house or anatomy. Before using the document camera, many students were unsure how to annotate or what kinds of notes to make in the margins. Seeing the process modeled live helped them better understand the concept and purpose of close reading. Students began to mirror the strategies of underlining key ideas, circling unfamiliar vocabulary, and jotting questions. Over time, they became more independent and confident readers rather than waiting for answers to be given to them. The first time we used it, we were annotating a nonfiction article to provide necessary background knowledge for my students as we were preparing to read the novel \"A Long Walk to Water\" by Linda Sue Park. The article was about the civil war of South Sudan, which plays a very significant role in the novel, so students must understand its ins and outs. Since they were able to see the annotations that I was making on the article in real time, it helped to strengthen their understanding while also giving them the confidence to make their own connections and develop personal insights within the article. \r\n\r\n I have also been using the document camera to play a game called Q-Less as a class during our enrichment time. This game involves rolling dice with letters on them, and students have to connect all the dice to spell words. Students have really enjoyed playing this word game, and the document camera allows it to be played together, helping to build up the classroom community and enhance students' teamwork skills. Students who may not typically volunteer during lessons eagerly participate during this game. They collaborate, share ideas, and celebrate one another's successes. It has become a time where students feel safe taking risks and working together, strengthening both their vocabulary skills and their sense of belonging. \r\n\r\nThe class novel \"A Long Way Down\" by Jason Reynolds has also been a huge success with my students. They were quite skeptical of it since it is written in verse and is unlike any other novel they have read before. But once we started reading, they were hooked! I selected this novel due to its main character and how different his life was from that of my students. Being in a rural community, many of my students are very unfamiliar with what life is like in an urban setting. The main character is also racially different than my students. I think exposure to main characters who are different than them is so important to help prepare them for life outside of our school and community. The novel sparked thoughtful conversations about choices and consequences. Students began asking questions and sharing insights that showed awareness of experiences different from their own. Watching them engage and enjoy a story that once seemed intimidating was incredibly rewarding. \r\n\r\nThese tools allow me to meet students where they are and create learning experiences that are interactive, inclusive, and meaningful. My goal is always to make reading and writing accessible and engaging for every learner, and these resources make that possible. I am beyond grateful for the opportunities you have provided for my students academically, socially, and emotionally through these items in my classroom. Thank you for supporting students and emphasizing the importance of education in Seneca County.","fullyFundedDate":1763806310793,"projectUrl":"project/promoting-literacy-in-middle-school/9909488/","projectTitle":"Promoting Literacy in Middle School","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Powell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10357347"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_134536","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":null,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":null,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":39,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":false,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR District Record","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":12.5,"schoolId":134536,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Seneca East Local Middle & High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Seneca East Local Middle & High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/seneca-east-local-school-district/seneca-east-local-middle-high-school/134536"}
