The juniors were instantly hooked on \"Scythe\". We talked about what they remembered from the few chapters we read last year, and built on that suspense with an anticipation guide. After those activities and the first chapter with Scythe Faraday coming to Citra's house for dinner, they had tons of questions and predictions. I love seeing them think of these questions and then look in what we've read for answers - practicing evidence and inference skills without realizing it!\r\n My seniors are happy to be reading the sequel novel \"Children of Virtue and Vengeance\" as well! It took a bit longer to recall the details from the beginning and middle of the series opening novel, but once we reviewed the drama and wars and politics, they were ready to see how Zelie and society in Orisha had changed with magic's return. And those opening few chapters had them hooked with the queen coming back and going against Amari! They're all on time to class now and ready with a book as soon as the bell rings :)\r\n The sophomores are enjoying my personal favorite \"The Things They Carried\" too. We're reading the chapters out of order, something I haven't tried before with this novel. But it's been really helpful to start with high engagement. They're really into figuring out the interpersonal relationships between the soldiers and how the culture and environment in Vietnam is impacting their mental health (and physical health). I've heard from their history teacher that they've been asking questions about the Vietnam War and other topics related to it during class, too! It's always really motivating to hear when the kids talk about what we do in class outside of class :)\r\n Thank you all again so much for this opportunity. It's not only building engagement, but giving my students a chance to practice reading and public speaking, finding and using context clues, characterization, and more. I love being able to use a story they're invested in to hit as many English standards as I can. It makes it so easy to tie everything together and build on examples they're familiar with.
